The "KURAW"

At my previous post  ( http://sharingfishingtips.blogspot.com/2010/01/kuku-fish.html ), i'd mentioned a local fish from my island, that we named it "KURAW" or "KOORAW".
I wonder if this fish could be find in other country, 'coz i never saw any article about this "KURAW" from other places.

This fish is one of the most wanted for many anglers in my island. Even i never get it striked for myself. Just saw my friend, who always be with me at most trips, cought it twice. The first one just a 3kg, and the next is 4,8kg. I heard it could be at 20kg at max. Rivers in my hometown are salt. So it's salt water fish. The bigger cought of these "KURAW" are always at the opened sea by local fisherman. It's a fiery predator, loves to strike for "BELANAK" ( our local minnow ).

My friend used his DAIWA Appollo and Pioner 4000, with 0.32mm Pioner line, and a prown as live bait. That's a clear day. Water was clear to, with 6-7 metres depth. Then about 05:30pm his rod bent for a great striked. He fought carefully because as my senior angler, he knows what is on his hook. He fought for the "KURAW" for 20 minutes.

We didn't bring our phones, so we took the pictures when we got to his home. We put it on a scale, it was 4,8kg. This is the picture of my friend, Panjang, with the "KURAW".

The "KUKU" Fish

It's abaut 6 month since my last fishing trip ... I'm too busy to get on a new trip.

I'll share some photos from my several trips ...

This is the place i'd spend my weekends with my friends ( Dompak River ). Some spot with few small groupers . But most exited is the "Kurau" ( the local name ). I'd never got this one, just saw my friends enjoying the fight whith the "Kurau". Commonly they're 7-8 kg. Maybe some other day i'll pull this fish up ...

We call this is the "Kuku" fish. It bites the lures slowly, but when the strike is on, it's a fast swimmer, getting wild, and keeps diving deeper. I love this one.

Here's the other one, with a bigger size. It becomes whiter ( a bit pale ) when it dies.

I used live bait for this "Kuku" . Prown with a finger lenght.
Wish i'll get a bigger one next time ...

Fishing For Barracuda

Barracuda is one of the fastest swimmer, just like wahoo. It's not as easy as people think to land on a large barracuda. This aggressive carnivorous fish frequently attacks flashing objects that appear as prospective prey. So, use a lure with flashing colours.

For trolling, one of the most effective lure is Rapala Countdown Magnum 18 and make it runs about 20-30ft behind the boat. Try to add 2ft-3ft of 40lb wire trace before the lure to prevent biten off.

If by casting, you can use Rapala X-Rap Saltwater 10, because it suits for almost every kind of saltwater predators. Also, extra wire trace before the lure will be usefull. Make a long cast for better results.

For the line, just make sure it strong enough to maintaince the power from the fish, because barracudas are rarely leader shy. Just remember to add a wire trace between the lure and  leader.

How To Fight With Rays

Rays have different anatomy with common fishes. They swim horizontaly, make them can be stickking on the ground. Rays mostly could be find in waters with sandy seabed. When the strike is on, they'll swim opposite direction to escape.

This is where you should cut the tail off

When we pull our rod and starting to rolling back, it dives deeper and suck on the seabed. For newbees, maybe you'll keep pulling your rod to make the ray breake away, so you can roll your line. But this just make your line tensed-up, and sometimes the mouth of the ray could be ripped.

So, the best way is just hold your rod still, let the tip of your rod "plays" by itself. The vibration from the end of tip will make the ray unmounted by itself. When it happends, that's when you pull your rod back and roll-up your line. Repeat this way when it stick again at the seabed, until you get it to the surface.

And the most important thing when it's near the surface, stay a distance from it's tail. Cut the tail of before you release your hook.
